Mistra snatch dramatic first-leg victory over HC Cocks in quarter-final

The quarter-final stage of the Baltic Handball League began with a dramatic encounter on Saturday evening, as Mistra secured a narrow 30–29 victory over HC Cocks in the first leg of their playoff series.

The result gives the Estonian side a slender advantage heading into the decisive second leg, while HC Cocks will still have every opportunity to turn the tie around.

Road to the Final 4

The Baltic Handball League season is played in three phases: the Main Round, Quarter-finals, and the Final 4. During the Main Round, all teams compete in a single group playing home-and-away matches against every opponent.

The top team of the Main Round qualifies directly for the Final 4, while teams ranked 2nd–7th advance to the quarter-finals, which are played as two-legged ties. The winners of the three quarter-final series join the Main Round winner in the Final 4 weekend.

Saturday’s match between HC Cocks and Mistra marked the opening leg of one such series, making the outcome an important step toward qualification for the league’s final stage.

Mistra take early control

Mistra started the game in strong fashion, quickly establishing control. Goals from Arno Vare, Aron Leppik, and Rauno Kopli pushed the visitors into an early 3–0 lead within the opening four minutes.

HC Cocks struggled to find rhythm in attack early on, missing several opportunities before Roni Syrjälä finally opened their scoring. However, Mistra maintained the upper hand as Vare continued to lead the offense, extending the advantage to 10–4 midway through the first half.

The home side gradually recovered, with Miika Kaukoranta, Roope Ahlgren, and Elias Hartikainen helping reduce the gap. Nevertheless, Mistra managed the closing minutes of the half well and carried a 16–13 lead into the break.

Cocks fight back in the second half

HC Cocks returned from halftime with renewed energy. Goals from Santeri Vainionpää, Niko Hållman, and Syrjälä helped the Finnish club close the gap to just two goals early in the second half.

Despite the pressure, Mistra continued to respond through their key attacking players. Patrick Padjus, Serhii Orlovskyi, and Vare kept the visitors in front as the game moved into the final quarter.

The hosts eventually drew level at 24–24 after a strong run that included another penalty from Hartikainen and several fast attacks finished by Vainionpää.

Dramatic final minutes

The closing stages were played goal-for-goal. HC Cocks briefly took the lead when Vainionpää made it 25–24, but Mistra quickly answered.

With just over two minutes remaining, the score stood at 29–29 after another strike by Vainionpää. The decisive moment came shortly after when Vahur Oolup broke through the defense and scored what proved to be the winning goal for Mistra (30–29) with under a minute left.

HC Cocks had one final chance in the closing seconds, but the last attempt from Eetu Nokkala missed the target, sealing the away victory.

Key performers

Mistra’s attack was led by Arno Vare, who delivered an outstanding performance with 9 goals, including four successful 7-meter throws. Patrick Padjus added 5 goals, while Serhii Orlovskyi and Vahur Oolup both contributed 4 goals.

For HC Cocks, Elias Hartikainen was the top scorer with 8 goals, converting all six penalty throws. Santeri Vainionpää scored 7 goals, while Miika Kaukoranta and Roni Syrjälä each added 4.

Second leg to decide the series

Despite the narrow defeat, HC Cocks remain firmly in contention as the quarter-final series will be decided across two matches. The upcoming second leg will determine which team advances to the Baltic Handball League Final 4, where the three quarter-final winners will join the Main Round champion to compete for the title.

With just a one-goal difference separating the teams, the return match promises another intense battle for a place among the league’s top four.
